Higher seminar in Conservation 170109-

Tid: 2017-01-09

Evenemangstyp: Doktorandkurs

The higher seminar in conservation gives the PhD students the possibility to present and discuss their own projects in an open seminar, as well as taking part of presentations of other scholar's work. The seminar course offers the possibility to practice presentation skills and to give and take critics. Seminars are given every second week. Included in the seminar series is a midterm seminar as well as a final seminar before the disputation for each PhD student.

The Thesis as a Genre within Conservation 170317-171024

Tid: 2017-03-17

Evenemangstyp: Doktorandkurs

Conservation is a rather young and multifaceted discipline, with connections in input from a wide range of other disciplines. For all researchers in the field, the need to reflect upon, discuss and define the discipline as such, and ones own contribution to it, is obvious. The main content of the course is to read and critically examine doc-toral theses within conservation and related disciplines. In the form of seminars we will discuss questions related to the content, structure and contribution to the disci-pline of a number of doctoral theses.

Introduction to mathematics for researchers 170817-180601

Tid: 2017-08-17

Evenemangstyp: Doktorandkurs

Refresh your knowledge in maths and get a deeper understanding of concepts and theory! Here we offer a broad and basic graduate course in mathematics. For problem solving and verification of your results you will learn how to use the computer efficiently for graphs, numerical calculations and algebra.

Rules, roles and results 170828-171009

Tid: 2017-08-28

Evenemangstyp: Doktorandkurs

There are as many versions of being and handling the role of a PhD student as there as PhD students and supervisors, but common tools and strategies can be used to make the time as a PhD student fruitful in both a personal and academic way. This is an interactive course that combines seminars and group discussions with practical exercises aimed at making the PhD education successful.

Automate your GIS - Scripting in Python 171023-171115

Tid: 2017-10-23

Evenemangstyp: Doktorandkurs

A geographic information system (GIS) is a system designed to capture, store, manipulate, analyze, manage, and present spatial or geographic data. Where most of the geoscientific research activities include a spatial component, knowledge and skills on how to effectively process and analyses this kind of information is essential to be a successful researcher. The aim of this course is to acquire programming skills and concepts on how to perform auto-mated processing within a GIS. The focus is mainly on the techniques and methods but also on the concept of the interaction between GIS and programming.

Approximate Bayesian Computation 180115-180317

Tid: 2018-01-15

Evenemangstyp: Doktorandkurs

Approximate Bayesian Computation (ABC) is an increasingly popular inference paradigm in applications where traditional (Bayesian or frequentist) inference is difficult because the likelihood function is e.g. computationally costly to evaluate or unavailable in closed, tractable form. In the course, we will start by briefly studying traditional Bayesian inference and different kinds of simulation-based inference methods in general. Then we proceed to ABC, covering theoretical and computational aspects including summary statistics for likelihood approximation, posterior sampling methods including rejection, markov chain monte carlo, and population monte carlo methods, as well as model selection. The course topics will to some extent be decided during the course because part of the examination will be through lectures given by the participants.
